The digital insurance game Fix je Risk has reached primary schools on Sint Maarten. So far, four guest lectures have been given. But if it is up to Lysanne Ravelli (Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten), there will soon be more.
Lysanne Ravelli is Corporate Communications Officer at the Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten (CBCS). She emphasizes that the bank would like to do much more in financial education. "In 2017, a huge hurricane hit Sint Maarten. Then it quickly became clear that not everyone has good insurance coverage. We believe that financial education can help raise awareness about insurance. When children share what they learned at school at home, it may make parents think again. Unfortunately, we are limited in capacity and budget to develop teaching materials."
Week of money
In her search for inspiration and information, Ravelli ended up on the website of the Week of money. There she came across the guest lesson Fix je Risk and immediately contacted project leader Oscar de Grave of the Week of money. "He immediately referred me to Patricia Swienink and then the ball started rolling quickly. Patricia sent us a link to the website and to the game. In addition, we received information about the guest lesson and an instructional video for the digital game."
Anglophone
A big advantage of the teaching material is that it is also available in English, ravelli thinks. "This provides enormous added value for the effectiveness of our lessons. We have therefore given three of the four lessons in English. In total, we have reached about 120 students in grade 7, so the beginning is here."
Lessons for Curaçao
In recent weeks, in addition to the Minister of Finance of Sint Maarten (Ardwell Irion), the president of the CBCS, Richard Doornbosch, and the chairman of the SXM Brokers Association Neil Henderson have given a guest lecture. Later, the director of the CBCS office in Sint Maarten, Raquel Lo Fo Wong, also gave a lesson.
In the meantime, Ravelli has become a fan. "We would also like to offer the guest lessons at schools in Curaçao next school year. In addition, we want to repeat the sessions in both countries annually. The learning material and the way in which the teaching material is developed is not only valuable, but also very user-friendly."
Hilarity
In the guest lesson, various insurance policies of celebrities pass by. "That caused a lot of hilarity among the students," Ravelli says. "But the mutual discussion about which body part they prefer to insure themselves also caused a lot of fun in the classroom."
Finally, she emphasizes that the guest teachers have made some adjustments to make the guest lesson more in line with the experience of the children on Sint Maarten. "We have therefore replaced the references to stolen bicycles with a car or phone from the parents."
