The Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS) will adjust the statutory question limits for life and disability insurance and income insurance as of 1 July 2023, at the request of the Dutch Association of Insurers. The amounts are increased by the percentage of inflation, in order to prevent the accessibility of these insurances from being limited by the relatively high currency depreciation.
The legal question limit is set out in the Medical Examinations Act. Below this amount, insurers may charge less when assessing applications for life and disability insurance. For example, one should not be asked about a genetic predisposition. The limit is also applied to the clean slate scheme for ex-cancer patients. Additional information may be requested above the question limits.
Interim increase
The next regular adjustment of the demand limit to the consumer price index would not take place until 2025. Because inflation exceeded ten percent last year, the Association proposed to the minister to raise the demand limit once in the interim. In this way, the limit amounts are more in line with current economic developments.
New question limit
The new amounts will take effect on 1 July 2023. For life insurance, the question limit will be increased from 294,803 euros to 328,131 euros. In the case of disability insurance, the question limit for the first year of disability will increase from 42,745 to 47,578 euros. For the following years of incapacity for work, an amount of 31,851 euros will apply (that was 28,616 euros).
