Prevent damage

Prevention is also important in other areas. View the page with all tips, tools and brochures.

Sometimes there are incidents with flammable insulation material. Insulation is important from the point of view of sustainability. But for cost reasons and to meet the climate standards, combustible plastic insulation materials, such as the combustible EPS, are still often chosen.

In addition to homes, businesses, hospitals and schools, there are also barn fires in which flammable insulation material plays a major role. Used construction materials can contribute to prevention, but combustible insulation materials ensure that fires spread faster. This makes it more difficult to flee and to limit the consequences of a fire.

In the case of new construction and renovation, for example, substantial improvements can be made, according to insurers. Insurers believe that only non-combustible construction materials should be used in construction, where possible. This must in any case apply to the main supporting structure, the façade, roofs and walls – including insulation material. They also believe that the use of foam plastic insulation materials should be avoided and Eurobrand class A1, A2 and/or B are advised. The Association has developed the brochure 'Fire behaviour of insulation materials'. This shows the differences between insulation materials and describes in which places these materials may be used.
