Index of household effects

Contents Index 2024

SEO calculated the contents index on behalf of the Association on the basis of data from Statistics Netherlands. Each year, the established index of the past year is translated into the index for the coming year. This adjustment is standardised and makes use of the forecast price and quantity development of consumer households for the current year. The index takes into account the price and volume development of private incomes. This means that changes in value, other than due to price changes, are also included.

The new index for determining the value of the contents has been set at 177.1 this year (2023: 182.1). The corresponding amount per point for the contents value meter is € 1,257.79. The lower outcome of the index compared to 2023 is due to the fact that the Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis (CPB) had estimated it too high for 2023. This estimate turned out to be incorrect and has been corrected for the 2024 index.

The base year of the index is 1993 (=100).

Reconstruction Value Meter Homes

The Reconstruction Value Meter for Homes is a useful tool for insurers and insurance advisers. This allows them to quickly and easily determine the average rebuild cost of standard types of housing. The rebuild value is the amount that an insured person needs to rebuild a home – if it were to be totally lost – in the same condition and according to current building requirements.

Every year, the Dutch Association of Insurers updates the meter on the basis of the reconstruction costs applicable at that time. An independent technical consultancy provides data for this. The calculation is not based on the current daily prices. After all, these prices are influenced by fluctuations in the economy. That is why the Association for the Reconstruction Value Meter is based on the structural cost development. For this reason, we advise insurers to provide the customer with guarantees against underinsurance when using the reconstruction value meter.

The Reconstruction Value Meter is not intended for consumers. The insurer or adviser must fill in the form.
